Description
Christ Church is a parish church dating from 1840, designed by John Whichcord. It is constructed of flint with a slate roof. The church comprises a chancel, nave, and a two-stage west tower with diagonal buttresses, a string course, cornice, and parapet. The western doorway has a four-centred arch with a label over it. Perpendicular style tracery is present in the three windows on each side of the nave. The nave walls are buttressed north and south. The church demonstrates advanced and accurate styling for its date. The interior was restored in the late 20th century. It was built after the Courtenay riots of 1838, using flint donated from the Canterbury City walls by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The church forms a group with the vicarage and the school, intended to improve the previously extra parochial and lawless village of Dunkirk.
