Description
The Dunkirk Radar Tower is a Grade II listed Chain Home transmitter tower built in 1937. It is made of galvanised steel and is now truncated. This radar station in Dunkirk, Kent, was part of a network of Chain Home radar stations that stretched from the south coast of England to the east of Scotland. Dunkirk is one of only five sites that have retained any of their original towers. The transmitter tower is the best-preserved example still in place in England, following the listed towers at Bawdsey in Suffolk and Stenigot in Lincolnshire. This site is one of the most historically significant radar locations in England, having played a crucial role in Britain's air defence during the Second World War, particularly during the Battle of Britain. The Bofors Tower at the site is also listed as Grade II, and other parts of the complex are protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. For further historical details, refer to the description of the Bofors Tower and the Scheduled Monument Assessment.
