Description

Dargate House is a house built in the early 19th century, with later additions made in the late 19th century at the rear. The building features rendered brick and a slate roof, standing two storeys tall with a basement and attic. A notable verandah has a tented roof supported by pierced cast iron piers and includes a side balustrade on a moulded base. The house has a plat band, cornice, and a parapet above a hipped roof, which has a slightly projecting pediment on the right. There are chimney stacks on both the left and right sides. The pediment contains a segmental-headed glazing bar sash, while the first floor has five glazing bar sashes with shutters, and the ground floor features five margin light French windows. Access to the house is through double half-glazed doors located in the right return, topped with an elliptical fanlight and an interrupted pediment.

Inside, there is a three-flight open well staircase with a double cast iron balustrade on an open string, illuminated by an elliptical lantern. The interior also boasts a plastered anthemion frieze and chandelier boss, along with modillion eaves cornices in all rooms and corridors, moulded panelling, and dado rails. The fire surrounds are made of marble, wood, and plaster, and one front room features an open screen supported by two fluted Ionic columns in antis.
