Description
The Old Vicarage is a timber-framed hall house, dating back to the 15th century, with additions from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is a building of group value. The house is timber framed and largely clad in painted brick, with mathematical tiles and plain tiles covering the roof. The building has an irregular plan, featuring three projecting wings; the wing to the centre left may have originally been a porch. The main part of the house is two storeys high with a hipped roof, and includes stacks positioned to the left, centre, and right. The windows are a mix of glazing bar sashes. A recessed three-storey wing from the 18th century is located to the left, also with a hipped roof and a stack to the left, but with no windows on the front. The main entrance is positioned in the re-entrant angle where the two wings meet, and features a half-glazed door with a sidelight within a porch supported by three Doric columns. A single-storey extension is present to the right. Inside, the roof timbers are smoke blackened, and the original timber frame is clearly visible. A 17th-century rear wing has a newel staircase and a windbraced, clasped purlin roof. An 18th-century staircase was inserted later, with turned balusters and a ramped, moulded handrail. The open string is foliated and bracketed, rising in three flights around an open well. A sash window illuminating the stairwell includes tracery in the form of a heraldic shield. Numerous contemporary hinged doors and metal casements are also present.
