Description
Newington Manor is a manor house dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. It features a timber frame that is close-studded and exposed, with painted herring-bone brick nogging and plain tiled roofs. Originally, it was designed as a hall with later additions including a chamber and service blocks at either end, although the service wing has been demolished. The building stands two storeys high on a plinth made of flint and brick.
To the left, there are two projecting gables: the larger one is the chamber wing, and the smaller one is the porch. Both gables jet out at the first floor, supported by heavy dragon posts, and have pierced and cusped bargeboarded gables adorned with pendants and finials. There is a projecting stack at the left end and another stack at the right end. The windows are arranged irregularly, featuring one four-light segmental oriel in each gable, along with a mullioned wood segmental bay window on the ground floor to the left. The right side of the porch has a two-light oriel supported by carved brackets, and there is a shallow projecting two-storey bay window in the hall that is partially blocked, along with a part-blocked light at the angle with the porch.
The porch contains a plank and stud door with sidelights, set under a four-centred arched opening that has fernleaf spandrels. The left return of the front is continuously jettied. Inside, the manor boasts carved mantelpieces, fernleaf spandrels, and roses. The staircase features two half-flights that are staggered, with winders and turned balusters.
