Description

Faversham Abbey Major Barn is a monastic aisled barn dating from around 1500, with some early 19th-century alterations. It is part of Faversham Abbey and features a timber-framed structure clad in tarred weatherboarding on a red brick plinth. The barn has a hipped roof that is now covered in corrugated iron sheeting. There is an early 19th-century hipped cart entrance on the east side and a lean-to on the northeast. The barn measures 132 feet in length and runs north-south, constructed from the north end. It consists of six full bays, with the third bay being narrower and serving as the only passage. The ends are supported by shored axial posts. The jowled aisled posts have slender tension braces, though three braces are missing from the southeast aisle. The crown posts are nearly chamfered and connect to the collar purlin, which is jowled on each side and features two head braces. Some sections of the wall frame were replaced in the early 19th century, and at least two bays have had their rafters replaced during that time. An early 19th-century first floor has been added to the north, creating a mezzanine level with a wooden hoist wheel. Both the arcade and wall plates display faced halved scarf joints.
