Description
The Chequers Inn is a 17th-century inn located on the north side of The Street in Doddington. It features a timber frame, with parts exposed and painted brick infill, as well as sections clad in painted brick, topped with a plain tiled roof. The building has two storeys on a plinth, with a jettied and half-hipped gable. Notable architectural features include a coved segmental oriel window on the first floor and a wood casement window in a brick projection on the ground floor, which has a half-glazed door to the right under a pentice. This is adjacent to a 19th-century painted brick extension with a hipped tiled roof.
On the left return front, there is a one-storey and attic section with a half-hipped projection to the left, alongside the two-storey section on a plinth with a plat band. The roof includes one hipped dormer, and there are stacks located at the centre and to the left. The first floor has two wood casements in the projecting wing, while the ground floor features four wood casements, one of which is in a 20th-century extension. A boarded door is located at the centre. The Chequers Inn was formerly a coach posting station on the old main road from Maidstone to Faversham and Whitstable.
