Description

Rysted House, along with No 2 Croydon Road, is a substantial house dating primarily from 1675, with later alterations. The main house is two storeys and an attic, with four windows facing Croydon Road. It incorporates a basement shop fronting the High Street. The roof is steeply pitched and hipped at the south, now covered with machine tiles, and features a prominent chimney stack with round brick shafts near the left hip. Three modern dormers have been added to the roof. The red brick walls are patterned with blue headers, and a first-floor band runs around the building. The windows are mullioned and transomed, with replaced leaded casements, and some have been replaced with sash windows featuring glazing bars; the first floor window on the left has this type. A modern plank door is set within a wooden doorcase featuring fluted pilasters and a modified entablature. The High Street elevation is two storeys and a basement, with two windows. The first floor has C19 sash windows and the ground floor has replaced three-light casements. A modern, but well-designed, basement shop front is present, with a continuous wooden entablature above. A kitchen extension is located at the north end, behind a modern arcaded loggia.
