Description

The George and Dragon Hotel is a timber-framed house, likely dating from the 17th century, with a front elevation dating to the 18th century. It is situated in Westerham Market Square. The building is two storeys and an attic, with six windows, and includes a two-storey extension with one window over a carriageway on the right side. It has a high-pitched, tiled roof with four flat dormers. Deep eaves feature exposed, moulded beam ends, and the right bay has a moulded eaves cornice. The walls are brick, partly rendered, and are now all painted white. The first-floor windows indicate the building was formerly two dwellings. The windows on the left are early 19th-century recessed sash windows with glazing bars; one modern casement has been inserted. The windows on the right are 18th-century sash windows with glazing bars in near-flush, moulded frames, some being two-light. A modern wooden balcony is present on the left side. Ground-floor windows include some modern casements, and recessed sashes with glazing bars. A late 19th-century, ornate wooden porch is also present. A painted panel on the first floor reads: "General Wolfe, on his last visit to Westerham, stayed at this Inn, December 1758." The rear elevations are of brick and stucco with 19th-century and modern casements. The roof sweeps low at the rear.
