Description
Black Charles is a late medieval hall house, restored in later centuries. The house dates primarily from the late medieval period, with additions and alterations in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is characterised by an irregular arrangement of windows and a steeply pitched tiled roof with a moulded wooden eaves cornice and a single gabled dormer. The first floor is clad in tiles, while the ground floor is brick with a stone plinth, and features casement windows. A projecting two-storey porch provides access. A left extension was originally an outbuilding, and a right extension, likely dating to the 17th century, has a random stone ground floor and tile hanging above. An original sun assurance sign is visible on the eaves cornice.
The interior retains extensive panelling, with imported linenfold panelling in the left extension, plain Elizabethan panelling in the central room, and Queen Anne period panelling elsewhere. Significant exposed timberwork includes remains of a screens passage and a carved crown post. Numerous assembly marks are present on the timbers. A restored inglenook fireplace is also a feature. A former jettied right end, with a 16th-century window, is visible within the 17th-century extension. A carved figure, possibly representing a thresher, is located on a bay post in the entrance hall.
