Description

FARNINGHAM HIGH STREET 1. 5280 (south-west side Mausoleum of Thomas Nash in churchyard of St Peter and St Paul to south of TQ 5466 10/117 Church II* GV 2. Circa 1778. Square Portland ashlar monument with tooled plinth having oval decora- tion, moulded cornice and vermiculated quoins. Dome with obelisk surmounted by flower. Door with frost work lintel and 2 oval grilles (front and back) with paterae beneath. Inscription "This Mausoleum was begun by Thomas Nash Esq Merchant Citizen of London and one of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the Counties of Kent and Surrey who died at Paris 7th April 1778 and whose remains are here deposited and finished by his Executors for a burying place for himself and family." Probably a youthful work by John Nash who was Thomas Nash's newphew and legatee.
