Description

The Mausoleum of Thomas Nash, located in the churchyard of St Peter and St Paul, dates from around 1778. This square monument is constructed from Portland ashlar and features a tooled plinth with oval decoration, a moulded cornice, and vermiculated quoins. It is topped with a dome and an obelisk that is surmounted by a flower. The mausoleum has a door with a frost work lintel and two oval grilles at the front and back, each adorned with paterae beneath. An inscription on the structure reads: "This Mausoleum was begun by Thomas Nash Esq Merchant Citizen of London and one of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the Counties of Kent and Surrey who died at Paris 7th April 1778 and whose remains are here deposited and finished by his Executors for a burying place for himself and family." This mausoleum is likely a youthful work by John Nash, who was Thomas Nash's nephew and legatee.
