Description

The Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is a Grade I listed building located on the south-west side of Farningham High Street. The church dates back to the 13th century, featuring a chancel and nave, while the west tower and windows were added in the 15th century. Ewan Christian restored the church and added the south-east chapel and north porch between 1868 and 1871. The structure is built of flint with stone dressings and has a tiled roof. The crenellated tower is designed in three stages, complete with diagonal buttresses and an octagonal stair turret. The nave contains three 15th-century traceried windows. Inside, the roof features embattled beams and four crown posts. The north-east nave window has stained glass from 1832, which includes some old fragments and was created by Charles Winston, the son of the incumbent. The church also houses a 15th-century octagonal font that depicts the Seven Sacraments, along with a double piscina and sedilia. Notably, the north wall of the chancel displays a fine alabaster Roper Monument from 1597 dedicated to Anthony Roper, the son of Margaret Roper, who was the daughter of Sir Thomas More and founder of the local Roper Charity. Additionally, there is a hanging monument to William Hanger, who died in 1751, and four small brasses.
