Description
Penshurst Lodge and the Gateway to Hall Place, built around 1870 by George Devey, is located on the north side of Penshurst Road. The structure features a long high wall made of red brick with a pattern of blue headers, which steps up in the center and is topped with a three-layered stone coping. The large double gate is made of wood and has cusped tracery, flanked by wrought iron posts with fleur de lys heads. There is also a smaller side gate, both set within stone Tudor arches that have carved spandrels. The wall extends northwest to form the front wall of a one-storey-and-attic lodge, which has a gable-ended side facing the road. The lodge has fairly high-pitched tiled roofs with two pairs of tall octagonal chimney shafts and many-planed cornices. The stone-coped gable end features roll moulding that connects to the top moulding of the screen wall. Stone quoins and dressings accentuate the five-light mullioned casement windows. Penshurst Lodge and the Park Walls are part of a group of structures.
