Description

These are two late medieval hall houses with alterations, dating to the late 14th or early 15th century. They are situated on the south side of Mill Lane in Shoreham. The houses are one storey and attic in height, with four windows, and have an irregular layout. The left end rises two storeys to reflect the slope of the hill. The tiled roof is hipped at the left and has dormers built on the wall plate. The exterior reveals exposed timber framing with plastered infill, and the windows are a mix of 19th-century and modern casements. In the late 16th or early 17th century, a chimney was added and the house was widened. Inside No. 1, much original timber framing remains, including the remains of a screens passage with a three-centred arch opening to the service end (No. 2). There is a large inglenook with an oven, and traces of a jettied east end. Nos. 1 to 5, Mill Lane Cottages, form a group.
