Description

Dorton House School for the Blind is an 18th-century house, originally of two storeys and two, three, and two bays, with a symmetrical design. The ends of the building project slightly. It is constructed from galleted coursed rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings. Around 1800, a third storey was added by George Dance the Younger. The roof is low-pitched and slated, partially hidden behind a balustrade above an entablature with a modillion cornice. The windows have moulded architraves with triple keystones, with bands resting on the keystones. In the late 19th century, large additions were made to the north side, matching the original building in external style. The original interior of the house was extensively remodelled, meaning little of the original fabric remains. Large eastern extensions added for school purposes are not included in the listing.
