Description

The former stables and hayloft to the Kentish Yeoman Public House, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, has been partially converted into a garage in the 20th century. This timber-framed building is clad with tarred weatherboarding and sits on a ragstone plinth, topped with a gabled, peg-tiled roof. It is a single storey with an attic hayloft that is positioned end on to the street.

The north elevation features an attic hayloft door with iron pintle hinges, along with later garage doors on the ground floor. The east elevation includes two gabled dormers, one of which retains the remains of a hoist. There are five early 19th-century top-opening casements with sloping weather hoods and three stable doors with plank doors. One original opening on the right side has been altered with a concrete block insertion that includes 20th-century casements and a small plank door to the left.

Inside, the structure has softwood framing of thin scantling, with chamfered ceiling beams that have half-inch chamfers and jowled posts. The southern part contains two stalls separated by vertical plank partitions, a wooden manger, remnants of a hayrack, and a wooden peg for hanging harness. The central area has four stalls with wooden stall partitions, a manger, and wooden apertures with iron grilles for distributing hay. The northern part has one stall partition and a manger, but the northernmost bay has been converted into a garage and W.C.
