Description
The garden wall to the east of Chevening extends from the house through the village and dates from around 1775. The northernmost section near the house features a red brick wall in English bond, approximately 12 feet high, topped with curved and wedge-shaped tiles. It includes a set of brick piers with stone coping and a cambered pedestrian arch that has a six-panelled door. There is a curved projection near the main entrance and three brick piers. Southeast of the main entrance, the wall has grey brick headers, a round-headed pedestrian gate with a tooled keystone and impost blocks, and an eight-panelled door. The carriage entry is marked by two large piers with wooden gates, a stone cornice, and a blocking course.
The wall continues behind the houses in Chevening village, constructed in Flemish bond on a Kentish ragstone base with ragstone galleting and no coping. There are some pilasters with stone coping and the lettering "I.H 35 feet." As the wall passes the village houses, it changes to English bond again. To the south of the southernmost house, there are three square brick piers with stone coping, followed by six brick pilasters with tooled pyramidal caps, a cambered arched pedestrian gate, and carriage entrances flanked by two large square brick piers with a moulded stone cornice and blocking course, which support wooden double doors.
