Description

Rysted is a house built in 1930 in the International Moderne style. The design was influenced by the owner, Percy Rothwell, a university physicist and enthusiast for modern buildings, as well as the architect AH Jones. The house has cavity brick walls, rendered and painted, and a flat roof covered with bitumen. It is two storeys high and has two windows on the front elevation. The original metal Crittall windows were replaced in the late 1980s with replicas from the same firm. Corner windows are supported by a mullion and an L-shaped concrete lintel. A fluted frieze sits beneath the overhanging eaves, and there is a roof tank.

The principal south-west front is positioned to maximize views, featuring French windows flanked by sidelights. The north-west front has an entrance with a flat hood, a metal door with sidelights, and a low-level letter box. A flat-roofed garage, with its original sliding triple door, is attached to the north. There is also attached fuel storage, leading on the north-east side to a three-bay brick and metal pergola of an unusual design, evoking three horizontal glazed casements.

Terrace brick walls extend south to square brick gatepiers with rendered caps and wooden double doors. Inside, the staircase hall features double doors with glazed panels and lozenge decorations, alongside a half-winder oak staircase with a built-in cupboard that has gilt bands. Some of the wood was salvaged from a Cunard liner. AH Jones previously worked for the Cunard company. The living room has a fluted frieze and a stepped fireplace surround with black tiles, chrome detailing, and a built-in picture surround. Built-in oak cupboards feature oak shelves and lozenge decoration. Original central heating radiators, oak flooring, and black tiles around the windows are also present. The doors are made of limed Oregon pine. Built-in cupboards are found in the master bedroom and another bedroom.
