Description
No. 5 Maidstone Road is a house, which may have originally been a shop, dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century. The ground floor is made of painted brick, while the first floor is timber-framed with plaster infilling. It has a plain tile roof and consists of two timber-framed bays, with the right side of the ground floor possibly serving as a shop. The building is two storeys high, set on a plinth, and features a continuous jetty that is underbuilt and higher than that of the adjacent Nos. 1 and 3. The first floor is close-studded, although some of the studs are applied. A large brick ridge stack is located at the left end. There are two single-light windows with original cills, one towards the left end and one immediately to the right of the bay-post, along with a two-light casement window to the right of each. There is a later blocked door opening at the right end of the first floor. The entrance door has two panels and is set beneath a shallow flat bracketed hood, accessed by one step and positioned off-centre to the right. Inside, the building features exposed timbers, including first-floor tension braces, and a plain crown post with two upward and two ogee downward braces. There is fragmentary evidence suggesting a possible timber stack, with a brick stack from the 18th or 19th century.
