Description
The former granary, located about 3 metres north of Great Tilden Farmhouse, dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with alterations from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is timber framed, featuring a rear lean-to and a ground floor underbuilt with red and grey brick at the gable ends, while the first floor is weatherboarded. The building has a plain tile roof and consists of three timber-framed bays over two storeys, topped with a half-hipped roof. There is a first-floor loading door on the left gable end, with the rest of the first floor unpierced. The ground floor is open to the front, supported by posts on padstones. The late 18th century or early 19th century rear lean-to and a later lean-to on the left gable end are also present. Inside, the granary features gunstock-jowled posts, original studding, and a clasped-purlin roof with diminishing principal rafters and straight windbraces. This structure is included for its group value.
