Description

Forstal Cottages, now a pair of houses, likely has a core dating back to the 16th century, with subsequent alterations in the 17th, 18th, and 20th centuries. The building appears to have a timber-framed structure, with the front elevation finished in channelled stucco. The left gable end is tile-hung, and the roof is covered in plain tiles. It stands two storeys high on a plinth, with simple 2-storey buttresses at either end of the front elevation. The roof is half-hipped, and a central brick stack rises from the ridge. The fenestration is irregular, with three windows: one 2-light casement, a central single-light window, and one 3-light casement. A boarded door leads to No. 4, positioned below the stack, while No. 5 has a ribbed door within a 20th-century extension to the right. The interior reveals a fragment of a substantial tie-beam and evidence of a former crown post. A cambered axial tie-beam, originally from a storeyed end bay, now forms part of the ground-floor ceiling. A large inglenook fireplace dates to the 17th century. The eaves were raised, probably in the 18th century. The interior of No. 5 was not inspected.
