Description

Boarley Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century. It is timber framed with plaster infilling and has a plain tile roof. The building is designed in an L-shape and has two storeys sitting on a plinth. The main range runs parallel to the road and consists of four timber-framed bays. The two central bays on the ground floor are close-studded, while the left end bay is an addition that is separately framed with more broadly spaced close studding on the ground floor.

There is a continuous jetty supported by moulded brackets over the three right bays, and a moulded dragon post is located at the right corner. The first floor features very broadly spaced studding, with one almost straight tension brace in each of the two right bays. The left end bay has one very straight tension brace and two cross-rails in the right half only.

A central stack is located on the front slope of the roof, with a projecting stack on the left gable end that has a broad galletted stone base. There is one 20th-century three-light casement window at the left end of the third bay from the right on the first floor, with a cill for the original window beneath it on the ground floor. Two other 20th-century windows are present on the ground floor.

The right gable end is close studded on the ground floor with broadly spaced studding and straight tension braces on the first floor. The rails are positioned a few feet from the eaves, possibly originally intended for frieze windows. The gable is jettied, and there is one central 20th-century three-light casement window on each floor. A rear wing consisting of two timber-framed bays extends to the right of the gable, also jettied with plain brackets. The roof of the wing is hipped with a gablet at the right end. A 20th-century ribbed door is located to the left.
