Description

Abbey Gate Farmhouse is a 15th to 16th century Wealden hall-house located on Stockett Lane. The building has two storeys and attics, with a hipped tiled roof and two small hipped dormers. The ground floor is mostly plastered, while the timber-framing with curved braces is exposed on the first floor. There are four casement windows, some featuring small square leaded panes, and the rear elevation displays three original wooden mullioned windows. Inside, the farmhouse includes a crown post roof and screen passages with two original openings leading to the pantry and buttery. A notable feature is the fine late 16th century wooden fireplace, which has shields in the spandrels and a massive stone chimneystack that rises through the house. The solar end features arches with Renaissance reeded pilasters.
