Description

Butchers Mere is a house dating from the 18th century, with an early to mid-19th century addition and later alterations. The ground floor of the main part of the house is made of painted brick, while the first floor is tile-hung. The front wing features reddish-grey brick in Flemish bond on the ground floor and is also tile-hung on the first floor. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The main range has a lobby entry plan consisting of two timber-framed bays and a central stack bay. There is a short wing that extends forward from the center and left side of the front elevation. The main range has two storeys and a garret, while the wing has two storeys. The main range has a half-hipped roof, and the wing has a gabled front. A red brick ridge stack is located towards the center of the main range, with a slightly projecting front gable end stack on the wing. The windows have irregular placement, featuring two two-light casements with slanted bracketed wooden hoods on the right side of the wing, and one three-light casement with a similar hood towards the right end of the main range. There is a panelled door set in a red brick porch with a plain tile roof on the right side of the wing, near the junction with the main range. Additionally, there is a gabled single-storey red brick addition on the left gable end of the main range, along with a further L-plan addition that has a hipped plain-tile roof to the left of that, and a rear lean-to. Inside, some framing is exposed on each floor, with a chamfered axial beam in the right ground-floor room. There is a narrow staircase located between the stack and the former front doorway, and a 19th-century fireplace in the ground floor room of the wing.
