Description
Dovecote, likely with a dual purpose and now used as a store, dating from circa 1711, with alterations in the 19th century. The dovecote is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond, with occasional grey headers. It has a plain tile roof and a circular plan with a conical roof, finished with lead towards the apex. It stands on a galletted stone plinth, with a platband interrupted either side of the door. There is a band of large inverted bricks around the top of the building. Two non-aligned hatches have been inserted to the west, one above and one below the platband. A later stable door is situated in the original door position on the north side. A datestone is positioned above the door.
The interior features thick, plastered walls with rebates for a first-floor level. The ground floor contains a substantial central post and cross-beam supporting 19th-century first-floor joists. On the first floor, a smaller circular central post has mortises towards the top and base for shafts, with a metal band around the top, which may be the remains of a potence. A heavy tie-beam, formerly spanning the diameter of the building, has since been cut through. The first floor is ceiled above wall-plate level, probably in the 19th century. Plaster nesting boxes are located in the upper area within living memory.
