Description
This barn, located about 56 metres west of East Hall, dates from the 17th century. It is timber framed, weatherboarded, and has a plain tile roof. The structure consists of five timber-framed bays, featuring a rear aisle and a central midstrey. The roof is hipped with gablets. At the front, there are central full-height double doors with a bracketed canopy above, and low central double doors leading to the rear aisle. Lean-tos are present on each side of the midstrey at the front.
Inside, the barn has chamfered jowled principal posts and aisle wall-posts, along with arch-braced tie-beams and arcade plates. The roof structure includes a clasped purlin design with short, curved wind braces, diminishing principal rafters, and vertical queen-struts supporting high collars. There are also raked queen-struts for a further continuous purlin lower down the roof and for the aisle purlin. The edge-halved arcade-plate scarf-joint is a notable feature. The right gable end and part of the front wall are constructed with staves, featuring plastered lath and daub infilling above the midrail and broad riven horizontal boarding below.
