Description
The Cookhouse at Hoppers Field is a hop pickers' cookhouse that has been converted into holiday accommodation. It was likely built around 1822, as a farthing from that year was discovered in the foundations during refurbishment in 2000. The building is constructed of Kentish ragstone rubble with red brick quoins, except for the front wall, which is timber framed and clad in weatherboarding on a stone rubble plinth. It features a slate roof that tapers towards the front and has six adjoining brick chimneystacks on the rear wall.
This one-storey structure has a front elevation that includes two late 20th-century casement windows, a door, and a four-light French window. There is also a late 20th-century window on a side elevation. Inside, there is one large room with five cambered brick fireplaces and a small room with one cambered brick fireplace, which is now painted white. All fireplaces have iron rods, two of which still have iron hooks for suspending cooking utensils. The ceiling beams are plain, with original beams reused where possible. This building is an exceptionally rare example of a Kentish building type.
