Description

St Cuthbert's Cottage and Bridge Cottage is a house pair located on North Street in Barming. The building dates from the 16th century or possibly earlier, with a rear wing added in the 17th century. It features a timber-framed structure, with the ground floor finished in painted brick and exposed principal posts, while the first floor is rendered. The roof is covered with plain tiles and consists of four timber-framed bays, standing two storeys tall with a cellar on a stone plinth. There is a low gable end jetty on the right side, and the roof is hipped to the left with a gablet. A slender projecting brick stack is located on the left, and there is a rear stack on the second timber-framed bay from the left, at the junction of the wing and the main range. The building has irregular fenestration, featuring four leaded 2-light casements. The entrance to St Cuthbert's Cottage is positioned to the right of centre, with a door that has four sunk beaded panels and two top lights. To the left, there is a short timber-framed rear wing with a higher ridge, along with a shorter addition, possibly a stair turret, situated between the main range and the wing. This addition has a hipped roof and a boarded door leading to Bridge Cottage on its right side. The interior has not been inspected, but measured drawings in the National Monuments Record indicate jowled principal posts on both the ground and first floors, as well as a sans-purlin collared common rafter roof.
