Description
The statue of Queen Victoria dates from 1897–98 and was created by J Broad to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee. It was presented by a former Mayor, Mr G M Arnold. The statue is made of terracotta by Doulton of Lambeth. The statue depicts Queen Victoria standing in full regalia. It is recorded that Doulton initially supplied a statue which was found to be faulty, and the current statue was subsequently sent. An earlier statue was originally located in the Borough Market House and is listed under Queen Street. The plinth is signed "J Broad/Sc." and “Doulton/Lambeth.” An inscription on the front of the pedestal reads “Victoria/Queen and/Empress/20 June 1837-1897”, and the back is inscribed “Presented/by/George Arnold/Mayor 1897/Grandson of/ George Arnold/Mayor 1797/Great Grandson of/Anthony Arnold/Mayor 1760.”
