Description

The statue of Princess Pocahontas is a life-sized bronze sculpture created in the 20th century, specifically in 1957, and cast from the original work by W.A. Partridge. The statue depicts Pocahontas in Native American dress, standing approximately 1.5 meters high. She is shown walking with her head held high and arms open, as if pleading with her father to spare the life of the settler John Smith. Her expression conveys concern, reflecting the tension of the moment. The statue faces north towards the River Thames, the route by which she arrived at Gravesend.

The statue is mounted on a battered granite plinth that is about 2 meters tall, bringing the total height of the monument to around 3.5 meters. The top of the plinth features an inset panel with carved crossed spears on a bed of leaves, along with the inscription '1595-1617'. Lower down on the plinth, there is a carved inscription that reads 'POCAHONTAS'. This monument is located in the Princess Gardens in Gravesend, Kent, next to the west door of the Church of St George.
