Description
Baynards Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century or earlier, featuring a two-bay lobby entrance design. The building was reclad in the early 19th century and underwent significant window changes in the 20th century. The ground floor is constructed of red brick with grey headers in Flemish bond, set on a cemented plinth at the front. The first floor is weatherboarded, with old tarred weatherboarding at the front and renewed weatherboarding on the sides. The roof is half-hipped and covered with old tiles, although the rear slope has modern pantiles. The cottage has two storeys and three windows, primarily fitted with 20th-century fixed casements, except for a central small pivoting casement. The central entrance features a doorcase with a plank door that has a diamond-shaped glazed cut-out. An original corner post is exposed on the right-hand corner, and there is a later outshut at the rear. Inside, the cottage contains an 18th-century wooden winder stair, a larger open fireplace in the left room, and a smaller 18th-century cambered fireplace added to the right room. The interior also features stop-chamfered spine beams and thick floor joists. The rear wall displays timbers of large scantling, and the roof includes a visible curved windbrace.
