Description
This 18th-century building, comprising Nos 2 and 4, consists of Harmony Hill and The Post Office, and is located on The Street, Shorne. It is timber-framed with cement-rendered elevations and a clay tile roof. The rectangular building has a hipped roof at both ends, and two main storeys with an attic above. The Post Office section has a double-fronted shop with intact glazing bars. Harmony Hill has a single door and window. There are three casement windows on the first floor and two dormer windows with hipped tiled roofs. A painted moulded timber eaves cornice runs along the top, and a string course is visible on the first-floor level. The original timber structure of the Post Office remains substantially exposed. Historically, the Post Office was used by Charles Dickens to post his manuscripts. The building was originally a single house.
