Description
The Royal Clarendon Hotel and 1-4 Royal Pier Mews is a building that dates from around 1860, originally converted from a house that was occupied by James II when he was the Duke of York and Lord High Admiral. The hotel is four storeys high, with a stuccoed exterior and a rusticated ground floor. It features twelve windows, a cornice and parapet above the third floor, and a modillion cornice above the second floor. The building has two projections that are not symmetrical, consisting of two and three windows respectively, with stuccoed quoins and iron balconies on the first floor. The windows are set in moulded surrounds with architraves above, supported by console brackets, and retain their glazing bars. A Tuscan porch is also present.
To the west of the hotel is a long low wing of two storeys with eleven windows, known as 1-4 Royal Pier Mews. To the east, there is a two-storey addition, with the ground floor room serving as a ballroom. Notably, Princess Alexandra, who later became Queen, spent her first night in England at this location on March 7, 1863, upon her arrival to marry the Prince of Wales. The Royal Clarendon Hotel and 1-4 Royal Pier Mews were originally part of a group with No 29, which included three figureheads in the grounds of No 29, although these figureheads were removed by January 2013.
