Description

The monument on Telegraph Hill is a mid-19th century obelisk made of a rough pebble-dash mixture. It was originally faced with Roman cement, which has mostly peeled away except on the north side. The monument was erected in memory of Charles Larkin, a notable auctioneer from Rochester, by the "Friends of Freedom" in recognition of his passionate advocacy for civil and religious liberty, as well as his dedicated efforts in promoting the significant Parliamentary Reform of 1832.
