Description

This is a small terrace of four houses located in Stone Street. The core of numbers 21, 22, and 23 were originally built as a workhouse in 1797. Around 1847, the workhouse was converted into houses, with numbers 20 and 24 added, and the rear section of the original building demolished. The houses are three storeys high with a basement and are rendered in stucco. They feature a parapet and cornice. There are eleven sash windows in total, most of which retain their original glazing bars. The windows are generally set within moulded surrounds with architraves, cornices, and brackets supporting the first-floor windows. Numbers 20 to 23 have rusticated stucco on the ground floor, while number 24 has a more recent brick ground floor. The doorways have rectangular fanlights above the doors, as seen at numbers 20 and 21. Number 20 features a small, modern shopfront, number 22 has a shopfront, and number 23 has a large, round-headed shopfront with a prominent keystone. Numbers 20 to 24 form a group of buildings with group value.
