Description

The K6 Telephone Kiosk is a standardised design from the 20th century, made of cast iron and painted red overall. It features long horizontal glazing in the door and sides, with applied crowns on the top panels, rather than perforated ones. Rectangular white display signs, featuring the word "TELEPHONE" beneath a shallow-curved roof, are present. The interior contains modernised equipment. The kiosk is in need of repainting, and its white display signs are faded and discoloured.

Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee, the K6 evolved from his earlier K2 telephone kiosk design of 1924, taking inspiration from Neo-classical architecture. The K6 was streamlined, more compact, and more cost-effective to mass produce. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were eventually made, before being largely replaced in the 1960s by simpler designs.

The kiosk stands in a prominent location in the south west corner of the village, situated in the car park of the Star Inn, a Grade II listed public house. It is approximately 50 metres south of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, a Grade I listed building. Due to the limited surrounding buildings, the kiosk maintains a strong visual relationship with both the pub and the church. Its significance as an example of 20th-century industrial design, coupled with its contextual relationship to listed buildings, justifies its Grade II group value.
