Description

Well Cottage is a house, believed to have originally been a Poor House, that was formerly made up of cottages. It dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with some additions from the 19th century. The exterior is finished in painted brick, with a strip of tile hanging beneath the eaves. The roof is plain tile, although it was formerly thatched. The building has one and a half storeys and features a hipped roof. There is a red and grey brick ridge stack towards the left end and a rear stack towards the right end. The front has four hipped dormers and irregular ground floor fenestration that includes six leaded windows: three two-light casements, two fixed lights, and one rectangular bay with a hipped tiled roof. A ribbed door is located below and slightly to the left of the left stack, sheltered by an open wood porch. To the right, there is a 19th-century lean-to with a leaded casement, and there are also 20th-century rear additions.

Inside, the house comprises eight timber-framed bays, including the stack bay. The bay to the right end may have been added later, while the rest are arranged in three rooms of two bays each, with the stack located between the left and central rooms. There is a lateral stack in the right room, which features an inglenook and may have been added in the 18th century. Traces of a small stack can be found within the right end room. The interior showcases exposed beams, and the roof has a dropped tie-beam with queen-struts leading to the collar. The central truss includes curved passing braces between the dropped tie-beam and the queen-struts, which are trenched past the interrupted tie-beam.
