Description
Somerfield Court is a house dating from the late 17th century, originally designed by Thomas Gomeldon, with alterations made in the early 19th century and late 20th century. The house is constructed of chequered red and grey brick in Flemish bond, with a plain tile roof. It is set at a right angle to the road, standing on a stone plinth. It has two tall storeys and a plat band above the ground-floor and first-floor windows. Rusticated brick quoins are present to the front and rear of the left gable end, facing the road. The roof is hipped, with a brick ridge stack to the left of centre and another at the top of the right hip. The front façade has seven windows, which are 16-pane sashes in open boxes (formerly with lower cills) with 24-pane sashes to the ground floor. All windows feature splayed rubbed brick voussoirs. A later brick porch has been added under the fourth window from the left, incorporating Doric clasping pilasters, a modillioned frieze and a moulded triangular brick pediment. Round-headed windows are set into the sides of the porch, and a round-headed architrave frames the panelled door, all with hoodmoulds. The left gable end features two blank round-headed windows on each floor, each with a moulded brick surround and keystone, flanked by two blocked rectangular openings with rubbed brick voussoirs. An early 19th-century rear wing to the right was demolished during the 1970s. Internally, the first floor left end room has a moulded cornice. The roof is of a staggered butt purlin design. The building is of group value.
