Description

Martello Tower No. 24 is a 19th-century defensive structure built in 1806. It is constructed of brick and covered in channelled cement render, forming a circular, slightly tapering tower that stands about 30 feet high. The walls are reported to be 5½ to 6 feet thick. The tower features a shallow domed roof with a projecting cement-rendered coping.

There are two small horned recessed glazing bar sash windows, one on the north side and one on the south, both positioned with their cills about 12 feet above the ground. Near the base, there are two small ventilation grilles. The entrance on the west side consists of a vertical door with a proud architrave and a segmental head, with its cill approximately 10 feet up. Below the cill is a T-shaped recess that continues from the door's architrave. A flagpole and a gun are mounted on the dome, and the number 24 is displayed on a plaque above the doorway. Access to the tower is now provided by an external 20th-century metal staircase.

Although the interior has not been inspected, it is said to contain a central brick pillar with vaulted arches, a magazine on the ground floor, and two rooms that served as quarters for the garrison on the first floor. This tower is one of a series built in 1806 as gunposts to defend against a potential Napoleonic invasion and is located immediately behind the sea wall. It is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
