Description
Dover Castle is a Norman keep built around 1155, constructed from ragstone ashlar blocks with flint accents and Caen stone dressings. Surrounding the keep are 18th-century houses that are two to three stories tall, made of ashlar with flint galleting and featuring round-headed windows. The castle is encircled by two concentric rings of walls and towers that date back to medieval times. Beneath the castle, there is a network of subterranean passages from the 13th century, which were enhanced for defense during the Napoleonic period.
