Description
The Sandwich War Memorial, erected in 1920, commemorates the First World War and includes later additions for the Second World War, the Korean War, and the Falklands Conflict. Designed by Omar Ramsden, a renowned silversmith known for combining traditional and modern styles, the memorial's construction was overseen by architect Ernest May and built by local bricklayer Henry Barlow, with the unveiling conducted by Alderman George Christopher Solley.
The memorial stands approximately 3.2 meters high and 3.5 meters wide and is constructed of red brick and rag stone, resting on a plinth of random rubble rag stone. It is arranged as a triptych, comprising a central panel flanked by two canted panels, with two steps at the front. The central bronze plaque features a deep-relief depiction of St George slaying the dragon, above a bronze inscription tablet displaying the Sandwich town crest and the words "1914 / 1919 / TO THOSE MEN OF THIS TOWN / WHO WENT FORTH TO FIGHT FOR / GOD, KING AND COUNTRY / AND CAME NOT BACK AGAIN.” Bronze panels to either side list the names of 87 individuals on the Roll of Honour. Three smaller bronze plaques have been added beneath the original three, commemorating those who died in the Second World War (1939-1945), the Korean War (1950-1953), and the Falklands Conflict (1982).
The memorial is designated at Grade II for its historic and artistic merit; as a permanent record of local sacrifice in the First World War and subsequent conflicts, it holds significant local and national cultural importance, while the bronze plaque, by Omar Ramsden, is a dramatic piece of sculpture.
