Description
The walls and gate piers to the south and east of Heronden enclose the lower courtyard and date from the 17th century or earlier, with some parts rebuilt in the 18th century. Constructed of red brick, the walls are approximately 8 feet high on the east side of the house and feature two leaf-scrolled and bifurcated wrought iron gates situated between two piers, topped with pineapple finials. These gates lead up a flight of 8 semi-circular brick steps, which were added in the 20th century. The wall along the roadside is about 4 to 5 feet high and rises to the north side of the house, also extending to the granary, which predates the late 17th century granary. The wall turns into a 20th-century wooden bar gate that retains the original piers and ball finials.
