Description
The stable block within the walled gardens at Northbourne Court dates from the early 17th century. It is constructed of red brick in English bond and features a pantiled roof. The building has one storey and an attic, sitting on a plinth with a brick cornice. There is a central gabled dormer and shaped gables, with the right gable being a 19th-century imitation of the early 17th-century gable on the left. The front elevation includes wooden casements with label hoods, two on the right and one on the left, along with a central multi-panelled door in a semi-circular surround and a rib and stud door to the right. The left return features a moulded window surround for a wooden casement in the gable and an elliptically arched carriage entrance with a large label hood. The right return has a mullioned window and a rib and stud door. Its position aligns with the great gateway, suggesting it may have been part of the front courtyard of Sir Edwin Sandys' grand house, although the exact location of the house within the walled garden is not known.
