Description
This is a group of five headstones located 1 to 5 metres north of the south porch of the Church of St. James, dedicated to the Dale family. The first headstone commemorates Edward Dale, a yeoman who died in 1753. It stands about 4 feet high and features a winged cherub head with a trumpet, along with crossed bones and an acanthus-wreathed moulded head. The second headstone belongs to John Dale from the early 18th century, though the inscription is damaged. It displays a crude death's head on bat-like wings with a crossed-bone background. The third headstone is for John Dale from the mid-18th century, approximately 3 feet high, featuring a triple head and two skulls with crossed bones. The fourth headstone is for Judith Dale, who died in 1738, standing about 3 feet high with crude double skulls and crossed bones. Lastly, the fifth headstone commemorates John Dale, who died in 1728, about 2 feet high, with a double head and two skulls that are distorted to appear as if they have ears, along with crossed bones.
