Description
The war memorial is located in the churchyard of the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin in Dover. It resembles the Blomfield Cross of Sacrifice, featuring a tall stone cross with an octagonal shaft and arms, positioned to the north-west of the church. The front face of the cross head is adorned with intertwined letters IHS. The moulded foot of the shaft rests on an octagonal plinth, which is elevated on two low, octagonal steps, all set on a low square base.
Five faces of the plinth display bronze plaques. The main dedicatory inscription on the front reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN AFFECTIONATE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF ST MARY’S PARISH AND CONGREGATION WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR GOD, KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The other four plaques, two on either side of the front face and alternating in size, list the names of 170 individuals, presented in no particular order.
