Description
This listing describes a group of four headstones located 1 to 5 metres southwest of the Church of St. James in Staple. The headstones commemorate the Woodward family. The first headstone is for Joana Woodward, who died in 1735, and stands about 3 feet high with a double head featuring two large and two small skulls. The second headstone is for William Woodward, who died in 1730, also about 3 feet high, with a double head, two skulls, and emblems of death. The third headstone is for Leonard Woodward, son of William and Joana, dating from the mid-18th century. It is about 3 feet high and has a scrolled pediment head with a winged cherub. The fourth headstone is for William Woodward, who died in 1771, measuring about 4 feet 6 inches high, with a floriated and scrolled head and a cherub in a sunburst design.
