Description
The Chequer Inn is a public house located on Ash Chequer Lane, dating from around 1500. It features a timber-framed structure with close studding and plaster infill, partially underbuilt with painted brick and rendered sections. The building has a Wealden plan consisting of four framed bays and stands two storeys tall with a basement on a high plinth. It has moulded bressumers supporting the jettied wings on both the left and right sides. The roof is hipped with gablets, and stacks project and are offset at both ends.
The front facade has wide eaves that overhang, supported by brackets. On the first floor, there are double wooden casements to the left, two wooden casements to the right, a two-light mullioned window to the centre left, and a five-light transomed and mullioned window to the left. The centre left features a tripartite glazing bar sash and casement, while the centre has a 20th-century five-light transomed and glazing bar sash. The ground floor includes a two-light mullioned window to the centre right and a glazing bar sash to the right.
Access is provided by a half-glazed door with a rectangular fanlight in the left wing, which is reached by three steps and plain iron rails. There is also a basement opening to the left and a half-glazed door in the left return. The interior showcases a fully visible frame.
