Description
The forecourt garden and stable walls to Knowlton Court are 17th century structures that were rebuilt and extended around 1904 by Reginald Blomfield. The front courtyard measures approximately 50 metres by 50 metres and features a red brick wall about 7 feet high. It includes a simple wrought iron gate and steps leading south to the garden area, as well as wrought gates to the north leading to the stable courtyard. The west wall is about 2 feet high with plain iron rails and central gates, while the gate piers are topped with stone ball finials. The pedestrian gates have smaller, bifurcated foliate overthrows. The central gates are supported by wrought iron piers, featuring central panels of clasped straps and an elaborately bifurcated foliated overthrow.
From the northwest corner of the house, a wall extends to the stable courtyard, which includes two large gate piers with ball finials near the house and a section of wall about 8 feet high. The remainder of the wall is about 6 feet high and extends for approximately 50 metres before sweeping west, rising again to about 8 feet high, and ending at a stable building that is now a garage. This building is one storey with an attic, featuring kneelered gables and a loft door on the right return, along with 20th century garage doors on the ground floor and a one-storey extension to the left, also with a kneelered gable.
To the south and east of Knowlton Court, accessible by the flight of steps from the front courtyard, are semi-formal gardens designed by Blomfield. These gardens include balustraded terraces, flights of steps topped with urn finials, and enclosing walls with gate piers that have scrolled shoulders and ball finials.
