Description
This is a terrace of nine houses, located at 1-17 Priory Road, Dover. Built in the early to mid-19th century, the houses have undergone later alterations. The exterior is primarily stock brick with rendered basements; numbers 1 and 3 have rendered fronts on the ground floor, and number 7 is entirely rendered. The roof is Welsh slate with gabled ends and a front parapet finished with concrete coping. Brick stacks are situated over the party walls, and are mostly rendered.
The houses are arranged in a terrace of double depth, with each having a single front room. Number 15 has its doorway on the left, whereas the others have entrances to their right. Number 1 likely originated as two separate dwellings. The front of the terrace has a slightly curved façade with an 18-window range, arranged symmetrically. The windows are mostly original sash windows: wide 16-pane sashes on the ground floor, tall, narrow 15-pane sashes on the first floor, and smaller 9-pane sashes on the second floor, with 12-pane sashes in the basement. Most of the first-floor windows have original wrought-iron balconies, although only numbers 5 has balconies on its second and ground floor windows. The window arches are flat brick, some now rendered. A stuccoed string runs at first floor level. Steps lead up to the front doors, which have moulded stucco architraves with cornices supported by console brackets, along with moulded four-panel doors and rectangular overlights. The cornices on the architraves of numbers 11 to 17 have been altered. The original balustrades of the steps remain only at numbers 3 to 9. Flat-roofed dormers, largely 20th-century replacements, are present on numbers 3 to 17.
At the rear, most of the original sash windows have been replaced, and numbers 7 to 17 have late 20th-century extensions, incorporating a single storey and basement.
Inside number 11, a marble chimney piece was noted, and it is expected that many of the houses retain original features such as joinery, including staircases, and moulded plaster ceilings.
