Description
The Riding Habit and the attached wall is a house, now serving as a house and shop, dating from the 15th century. It features a timber frame that is rendered, with applied timber arcading, and part of it is underbuilt with red brick. The roof is plain tiled and follows a Wealden hall house plan. The building has two storeys and a basement set on a plinth, with the central two bays recessed on the ground floor and jettied. The eaves are boxed, leading to a hipped roof with a stack positioned to the left, forward of the ridge.
The fenestration is irregular, with three wooden casements on the first floor. On the ground floor, there are plate glass shop windows to the left and centre left, along with a glazed door to the centre left and a four-light mullioned window with arched heads. To the right, there is an early 18th-century panelled door at the top of a flight of three steps. The basement has openings in the centre. The wall to the right is from the 17th century, made of red brick in irregular bond on a flint base, standing about five feet high and extending approximately 15 yards along the road.
